Learning Targets

The Learner will...
  • be able to search zSpace activities from teacher laptop to make best use of time in lab.
  • become familiar with the use of zSpace stylus and 3D glasses in 3D apps of the Zone.
  • be able to access from their laptop the student work submitted to the teacher station.

What is it?

zSpace is a combination of specialized desktop computer and software that use 3D glasses and an interactive pen to bring math and science simulations out of the the flat "clickable" world of the computer screen. Students work in pairs to manipulate 3D experiments that are too costly or cumbersome to do in real life. There are even dissectable models of animals and machines that peel back the complexity of the real world and place it in the learners grasp.

There are several apps within zSpace. Each has its own group of lessons and specialized sandbox area. See the table below for an overview and location for the main apps.

Where is it?

As of September 2016, it is in only 3 buildings in CMCSS. Kenwood High School has a teacher station on a cart for whole group learning. Kenwood
Middle School has 10 student lab machines and 1 teacher station and Northwest High School has 11 student lab machines and 1 teacher station.

How to Plan Lessons

While it would be ideal to have the ZSpace software on each science teacher’s laptop, that is not the case. It is only on the student lab computers and the teacher station computer. It is also not expected for you to "camp out" down there just to search through the activity list. You can search through the list from ZSpace’s website and then you will only need to spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with the activity before your students complete it.

While it would be ideal to have the ZSpace software on each science or math teacher’s laptop, that is not the case. It is only on the student lab computers and the teacher station computer in room H-4 at KMS and room at NWHS. It is also not expected for you to camp out down there just to search through the activity list. You can search through the list from ZSpace’s website and then you will only need to spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with the activity before your students complete it.

Two Ways in…

  1. Go directly to this link, http://edu.zspace.com/activities/#/ OR
  2. Go to www.zspace.com. Click STEM EDUCATION. Click ACTIVITIES.

Once there…
  1. Click on your subject, such as Physical Science.
  2. Scroll through the Topics. Most activities have 2 parts, an investigation and either a check or a challenge.
  3. Click on the activity you wish to explore. You will find…
    1. A brief description of the activity.
    2. A short video to show the basics of the activity.
    3. A tab of standards (Not all are listed for TN.)
    4. A tab for Downloads that shows...
      • The Activity Plan to help teachers plan
      • The downloadable file that plays in the ZSpace program
      • A PDF document with guiding questions and for notetaking
      • A Google Doc worksheet as an alternative to PDF.

How to Use the Teacher Station for Groups

Sharing the content of the zSpace computers is important. Students and teachers can learn math and science concepts using this tool with a small group or a whole class. Access the zView from the Home button within the activities and sandbox.

How Students Login to zSpace

There are several different apps available for math and science instruction. Once an app is selected, students will need to login to save their work and to turn it in to their teacher. Students login as with their standard student username. The first time a student logs in, they will need to create a password. Direct them to use their standard CMCSS password. While teachers CAN reset the password by logging into the teacher station server, it is not preferred to do so as it takes class time to do so.

(The zSpace stations are only accessible at their physical locations within their school.)

Students will work in pairs. One partner will have the motion capture glasses and stylus. The other partner will have the regular 3D glasses, mouse, and keyboard. They will need to sign-in, go to the lab activity their teacher chooses, and add their names with class/period before they SUBMIT their work.

How Student Turn In Work

For students to turn in their work, the zSpace computer at the teacher station MUST be turned on and running. It has the zSpace Edu Server installed on it. Student work is only turned in to this server.

How to Collect Student Work from your Teacher Laptop

All work should be sent to the EDU server on the teacher station computer through the connection in the zSpace Zone apps. On the teacher station, go to Chrome and type "localhost:4000" in the address bar. AnswerWeb will launch. Login with your username, firstname.lastname . The first time you login, you will create a password.
  1. Login to EDU Server
    • You DO NOT have to be at the teacher station computer to see student work. You DO need to be on our district's WiFi in any school building. From either Firefox or Chrome web browser on your teacher laptop, type the IP address of that teacher station, a ":" and the number "4000". (i.e. 10.50.30.1:4000) That will bring up AnswerWeb for your school. Login with your username, firstname.lastname . The first time you login, you will create a password.
    • KMS teacher station IP address - 10.50.30.1, so go to the KMS AnswerWeb server with http://10.50.97.130:4000
    • NWHS teacher station IP address -10.74.17.200, so go to the NWHS AnswerWeb server with http://10.74.174.130:4000
      • The links above WILL NOT work outside of the CMCSS school network. You will not be able to view them from home.
  2. Type your username, firstname.lastname, and password. (The first time you login, you will setup your own password.)
  3. Click "Activities" tab. You will see all labs and a drop-down menu to sort by Today, Last Week, Last Month, Last 3 Months, or All.
  4. Click an Activity. Activities are date-stamped.
  5. Find your students by sorting "Class" name.
  6. Click "View" or "Edit" by each student's work. Remember, work was done in student pairs.

Monthly Maintenance

Much like your teacher laptop, there are updates from time to time. If they aren't done regularly, the zSpace machines will fall further behind and not be as helpful.

zSpace uses a program on the desktop called zSpace App Manager to update and manage apps. This app needs updates as well. Any program that is not a demo, but is in the App Manager list can be downloaded and installed. There are 3D models and Activity packs that will show here as well.

To see the zSpace Manager, you may need to quit zSpace Zone.
  1. Move the mouse to the top of the window, click FILE and then EXIT.
  2. (Optional) If the menu does not show, hold CONTROL and press "L". It will unhide the menu in zSpace Zone.
    • The FILE menu also allows you to add programs to the zSpace Zone.
      • Click "Add Application...".
      • Navigate to the folder where the shortcuts to the programs are kept.
